The Story of Primrose Cottage Scents

A little about us (me):

My name is Úna, I’m 24 and I run my wee business Primrose Cottage Scents from my home – Primrose Cottage.

After months of making my own wax melts for my own use, October 2020 I decided to launch my own wee business. My mammy passed away on my 23rd birthday (April 2019) while I was studying my final year of my undergrad degree. My mammy is, without a doubt, at the heart of Primrose Cottage (our beautiful home that she and my daddy built) and now, Primrose Cottage Scents too.

For a year and a half after my mammy passed away, I distracted myself with further academic study and I received my certificate for my Masters in Psychology in December 2020 -
although, it was March 2020 that I began my wax melt journey. Like a lot of people, I found a wee hobby during lockdown. I did this in my spare time while studying my Masters but when I finished my degree, I had a lot of time to think and my mammy’s death hit me more. So I continued experimenting with the wax melts and set up my own wee “lab” in my mammy’s “sewing room”. Mammy was a very creative individual and having my own creative project to focus on and being in my mammy’s space surrounded by all her bits and pieces – it was my own little “Safe Haven”. I was coming to terms with reality in a much calmer way than I would have ever imagined.

Graduating during the Covid19 pandemic did not help when it came to trying to get experience for work. I really struggled to get my foot in a door that would give me experience to kick start my career in Psychology. Eventually, this led me to starting Primrose Cottage Scents in October 2020.

Mammy told us that she wanted our home called “Primrose Cottage”, so the name is very sentimental to me. I try to incorporate my mammy into the business in my own way. I named one of our scents “Daisy Daisy” (inspired by Marc Jacobs Daisy) as mammy always used to sing “Daisy Daisy give me your answer do…” to me. Another of the scents inspired by Jo Malone – Lime, Basil & Mandarin was also one of my mammy’s perfumes.

I’ve always loved home fragrance and I often remember my mammy coming into my bedroom and asking “Jeepers, how many different things are ye burning the day” (I would literally have about 2 candles and goodness knows how many tealights going at once lol) or saying “ohhh smells lovely the day” and she’d have a wee sniff to try and guess the scents. I can’t help but believe she guided me down this particular path when I was feeling super lost in this crazy world we live in. This wee venture has provided me with so much joy and fulfillment through a difficult time in my life. I love that it is my own little project and I’m proud of what is becoming of it. But it makes it all the more special to me with how it has helped with my grieving and how it allows me to feel so close to mammy.

All of our products are handcrafted in my mammy’s “sewing room” at Primrose Cottage – a room filled with my mammy’s beautiful creations.

Thank you so much for taking the time to read my story and I hope to hear from you soon.

Take Care,

Úna x
